Structured Literacy

At Mayfair School, we are proud to implement the 'iDeaL' learning approach to deliver the Structured Literacy Approach to our students. This method has been integral to our teaching long before it became a government requirement. The foundation of Structured Literacy is consistent across New Zealand, and we've seen great success with our unique delivery system.

Our data shows significant improvement in both the confidence and capabilities of our students, which is a testament to the effectiveness of the iDeaL approach. We are particularly proud of our Tier support system, which provides extra assistance to learners who need it. With a solid foundation in place, this support is functioning exceptionally well, ensuring all our tamariki have the opportunity to thrive.

Nau mai haere mai to a school where literacy is more than just learning to read and write – it's about building a strong foundation for lifelong success.

NUMICON

We are starting a new adventure by using the Numicon approach in our maths programme. This hands-on tool helps students understand maths in a fun and engaging way.

Our teachers are also on this journey, learning new ways to teach and support our students. With Numicon, kids can really get to grips with maths concepts, building their confidence and skills.

We're excited about the positive changes Numicon is bringing to our classrooms. It's all about making maths fun and accessible for everyone, and setting up our tamariki with skills they'll use for life.

Writing

Our writing programme is enriched by the insights of Helen Walls and the Syntax Project, focusing on effective skill-building in writing.

We're excited to start exploring the Think SRSD (Self-Regulated Strategy Development) approach in our classrooms. This method is designed to support students in becoming independent, strategic writers by linking writing and reading skills. As part of Think SRSD, we incorporate GIST and TIDE organisation skills. GIST helps students summarise and understand the main ideas of a text, while TIDE provides a clear structure for organising their writing.

By integrating these strategies, we aim to help our students write with clarity and purpose, enhancing their ability to express ideas and engage with texts. We're eager to see how this approach will empower our tamariki to become confident communicators.
